UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW

The University of Melbourne is a public research university in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its main Parkville campus is located just north of Melbourne's city centre, with additional campuses and facilities across the city and regional Victoria. The University's own publications describe it as Australia's #1 ranked university (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, as cited in the University's international scholarships brochure).

Undergraduate study follows the Melbourne Model: students start with a broad generalist bachelor's degree — in Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design, Fine Arts, Music or Science — and combine breadth subjects from other fields before specialising, then often continue into a professional graduate degree in areas such as law, engineering, medicine, teaching or business. Graduate study includes a large range of coursework master's degrees and research degrees (master's by research and PhD) across its faculties.

Melbourne attracts a large international cohort, including many students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, and the city itself is home to established South Asian communities, places of worship and familiar food. International students are supported through the University's student services (Stop 1) and dedicated international student pages covering visas, health cover (OSHC) and settling in.

Tuition fees for international students vary by course and are published on each course page, so applicants should check the exact indicative fee for their degree and budget for annual increases. A wide range of scholarships, many awarded automatically on academic merit, can reduce the cost significantly.

International tuition fees vary by course and are published as indicative fees on each official course page; many graduate courses show indicative first-year fees of around AUD $45,984 (2026 figures), while high-cost professional courses charge more. Always confirm the exact fee for your course and intake on the Study website.

ADMISSIONS & REQUIREMENTS

International students apply directly to the University of Melbourne online (undergraduates outside Victoria may also use VTAC where applicable). You choose a course, check that your qualification meets the entry standard and subject prerequisites, upload certified academic documents, and demonstrate English language proficiency. Most courses have two main intakes each year (Semester 1, starting around February/March, and Semester 2, starting around July), and closing dates vary by course, so apply early — scholarship outcomes are linked to course offers.

Direct international applicants pay a non-refundable application fee of AUD $154 per application; graduate research applicants and sponsored students are among those exempt. If you receive an offer, you accept it online, pay the tuition deposit and Overseas Student Health Cover, and then receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for the Australian student visa application.

Students who do not yet meet entry or English requirements can consider pathway and English bridging programmes advertised by the University.

IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (university minimum; some courses require higher scores).

PROGRAMS & STUDY AREAS

Undergraduate degrees follow the Melbourne Model: Bachelor of Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design, Fine Arts, Music and Science, with majors ranging from economics and media to engineering systems, data science and psychology, plus diploma and breadth options outside your main field.

Graduate coursework programmes include professional master's degrees in engineering, information technology, business and management (including the MBA at Melbourne Business School), law (JD), education, public health, architecture and the health sciences. Research degrees — master's by research and PhD — are offered across all faculties.

Each course page on the official Study website states entry requirements, English prerequisites, indicative international fees and intake dates, and students should rely on that page for the exact details of their degree.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FUNDING

Melbourne awards many scholarships to international students automatically on academic merit — no separate application is needed for its main schemes. The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship is for talented bachelor-degree students who are citizens of countries where international educational opportunities are limited by financial disadvantage (countries with GDP per capita of US$10,000 or less on the University's eligibility list); it provides a 20% fee remission for the duration of the course from 2027, with at least 110 scholarships available, and successful candidates are notified within five working days of receiving a course offer.

A Melbourne International Graduate Scholarship offers a similar 20% tuition fee sponsorship across eligible graduate coursework study areas. For research students, Graduate Research Scholarships provide full fee remission plus a living allowance, relocation grant and Overseas Student Health Cover for eligible international students, with automatic consideration when you apply for a graduate research degree.

Because these awards are tied to your course application and offer, applying early in the admissions cycle improves your chances.
