University of Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany
The University of Hamburg is one of Germany's largest public research universities, with more than 170 degree programmes across eight faculties. It charges no tuition fees and offers several master's programmes taught fully or partly in English.
The University of Hamburg (Universität Hamburg) was founded in 1919 and is one of Germany's largest universities, with more than 170 degree programmes across eight faculties, including law, medicine, humanities, economics and social sciences, and mathematics, informatics and natural sciences. In 2019 it was awarded University of Excellence status as part of Germany's Excellence Strategy.
As a public university in Germany, it charges no tuition fees; students pay only a semester contribution (currently €402 for the winter semester 2026/27), which includes a semester public transport pass for the greater Hamburg area. Several Nobel laureates, including physicists Otto Stern, Wolfgang Pauli and Isidor Rabi, taught and researched at the university.
Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German, but the university offers a growing range of master's programmes taught fully or partly in English — notably at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN) and the English-taught MSc Innovation, Business and Sustainability (MIBAS). The Department of International Affairs runs advising services, buddy programmes and scholarship schemes for international students.
Why the University of Hamburg suits South Asian students
- No tuition fees — only the semester contribution of €402 (winter) / €384 (summer) is payable
- English-taught master's options such as MIBAS and the MIN Faculty's international master's programmes (Data Science and AI, Intelligent Adaptive Systems, Physics, Climate Sciences and more)
- APS certificate requirement explicitly documented for applicants from India, China and Vietnam (MIBAS)
- Merit scholarship and degree-completion grants reserved for international students, plus the Deutschlandstipendium (€300/month)
- PIASTA intercultural programme, welcome buddies and legal advising for international students
Full tuition detail (verified): No tuition fees: the University of Hamburg abolished tuition fees in October 2012 — students only pay a semester contribution. The semester contribution is €402 for winter semester 2026/27 (comprising €352 student-body/public-transport/Studierendenwerk contribution including the semester public transport pass, plus a €50 administrative fee) and €384 for summer semester 2026. The contribution covers a semester public transport pass valid in the greater Hamburg area. Proof of health insurance is required at enrolment; student health insurance costs roughly €145 per month including nursing care insurance. Degree programme pages confirm 'Tuition Fees: none, but Semester contribution'.
Foreign education certificates generally need to be recognized before applying to the University of Hamburg, and this recognition process is free. For master's programmes (except MIBAS), foreign degrees are recognized as part of the application process at the relevant faculty — no separate recognition application is needed.
For the English-taught MSc Innovation, Business and Sustainability (MIBAS), applicants with degrees from outside Germany must submit both a recognition application and the programme application via the STiNE online portal. Applications from China, India and Vietnam must include an APS certificate. The MIBAS application period is 15 February to 31 March for studies starting in October.
For the MIN Faculty's international master's programmes, the application period is 15 February to 31 March each year for the winter semester. For most other master's programmes, the winter-semester application period runs 1 May to 15 June and the summer-semester period 1 December to 15 January. Documents not issued in German or English require certified translations, and simple copies are sufficient for applications.
Applicants from China and Vietnam can use an APS certificate as an accepted endorsement of recognition of their qualifications; applications from India, China and Vietnam to MIBAS must include one. All bachelor's programmes at the university are taught in German, so German language proof is required at enrolment for bachelor applicants.
Full English requirement detail (verified): No single university-wide IELTS requirement is published; English-language proof rules vary by programme statute. Verified examples from official programme pages: M.Sc. Intelligent Adaptive Systems requires IELTS 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in each section); the English track of the M.Sc. Business Administration requires IELTS ≥ 7; MIBAS (WiSe 26/27 intake) no longer requires an English certificate — the study aptitude test must instead be taken in English. Always check the application information of the specific programme.
The university lists international master's programmes offered in English or in English and German at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN), including M.Sc. Atmospheric Sciences, M.Sc. Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, M.Sc. Integrated Climate System Sciences, M.Sc. Intelligent Adaptive Systems, M.Sc. Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Sciences, M.Sc. Molecular Plant Science, M.Sc. Ocean and Climate Physics, M.Sc. Physics, M.Sc. Wood Science, M.Sc. Industrial Mathematics, M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Mathematical Physics, and the MATHMODS programme.
Other English-taught options include the MSc Innovation, Business and Sustainability (MIBAS) at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (taught entirely in English; entry requires a relevant bachelor's degree plus a GMAT/GRE/GTEBS study aptitude test taken in English) and the English-track of the Master of Science in Business Administration (English track: TOEFL iBT ≥ 95, IELTS ≥ 7, or Cambridge C1 Advanced).
English proof examples

The Department of International Affairs coordinates three scholarship programmes for international students at the University of Hamburg: the merit scholarship (for especially talented, socially or culturally engaged international students who are not German nationals and are not eligible for the federal student loan scheme; initially awarded for 12 months with monthly payments), the degree completion grant (for international students in the final phase of their studies), and the Hilde Domin Programme.
The university also awards the Deutschlandstipendium (€300 per month for one year, open to all enrolled students regardless of nationality) and subject-specific faculty funding. DAAD scholarship databases are recommended for additional international funding options. Note that the merit scholarship currently has no further calls for applications, and the university is not currently participating in the Hilde Domin nomination procedure.
