UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW

The University of Göttingen (Georg August University of Göttingen) is a public research university in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, with a strong tradition in the natural and life sciences, humanities and social sciences. It is a popular choice for international students thanks to its many English-taught master's programmes and the absence of general tuition fees.

The university estimates living expenses in Göttingen at around EUR 750 per month. The International Office (Göttingen International) welcomes new international students with an introductory week and supports them with application, enrolment, visa and residence questions.

Full tuition detail (verified): There are no general tuition fees at the University of Göttingen (tuition has been abolished in Lower Saxony). All students pay a semester/administrative contribution of around EUR 380 per semester (the exact amount is announced before each semester). It covers local buses in Göttingen, regional trains in Lower Saxony, free or reduced entry to cultural events, and subsidized canteen meals. Doctoral tuition is fully subsidized by the government; doctoral students pay only the administrative semester fee of approx. EUR 300 (reduced by EUR 75 for holders of German public scholarships such as DAAD).

International applicants apply through the university's online application portal in four steps: register, create and complete the application, upload certificates and documents, then submit. Applications left 'in preparation' and not submitted by the deadline are not considered.
