UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a public technical university in Karlsruhe, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As a University of Excellence, KIT combines strong research with intensive dialogue with society and offers about 100 bachelor's and master's degree programs.

Why KIT suits South Asian students

  • Wide range of consecutive master's programs, many taught in English, with a single central online application portal run by the International Students Office.
  • Clear, published fee structure: non-EU students pay €1,500 tuition per semester plus about €184 in general semester fees.
  • Deutschlandstipendium scholarships of €300 per month are open to students of all nationalities.
  • Karlsruhe is a mid-sized, affordable student city in southwest Germany with strong engineering industry links.

Good to know

Bachelor's programs at KIT are taught in German, so undergraduate applicants need German language skills. Most master's programs popular with international students are taught in English and require proof of English proficiency instead. Applicants from India, China and Vietnam must submit an original APS certificate with their application.

Full tuition detail (verified): Under Article 3 of the Baden-Württemberg Act on State University Fees (LHGebG), international students from third countries (non-EU) in bachelor's, teacher-training and consecutive master's programs pay tuition of €1,500 per semester. In addition, all students pay general semester fees: €80 administrative charge + €92 Studierendenwerk charge + €12 Student Union charge = €184 per semester, so non-EU students pay €1,684 per semester in total (figures published by KIT's International Students Office, updated May 2026). EU students pay only the general fees (about €184 per semester). Some international students may be exempt from the €1,500 tuition. Second-degree tuition is €650 per semester. The €1,500 tuition is not charged for the preparatory German language course at the Studienkolleg, which has separate fees.

ADMISSIONS & REQUIREMENTS

International applicants apply online through KIT's own application portal run by the International Students Office (IStO). Applications are usually possible from six weeks before the program's application deadline: portals for the winter semester open on May 15 and for the summer semester on December 1 of the previous year. Deadlines are strict and published on each program's page.

Application steps

  • Check your program: confirm whether admission is restricted (NC) and note the program-specific requirements and deadlines on the program's details page.
  • Prepare documents: bachelor's degree certificate and transcript of records (with credit-point/hour details) in the original language plus official translation, extensive course descriptions (module handbook) for mandatory courses, proof of language skills, and program-specific extras such as motivation or recommendation letters.
  • APS certificate: applicants from China, Vietnam and India must enclose the original APS certificate. KIT does not accept group APS certificates, and the certificate must be current by the application deadline.
  • Language proof: for English-taught master's programs, general proof such as TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS Academic 6.5 (no section below 5.5); for German-taught programs, B1 German for the application and DSH-2 or equivalent for enrollment.
  • Submit and accept: upload all documents as PDFs in the portal. If admitted, you must actively accept your study place in the portal or it will be given to other applicants.

Plan for your visa early: KIT notes that getting a visa usually takes at least six to eight weeks. Applicants whose school qualifications do not yet qualify for direct entry can apply to the Studienkolleg preparatory course (deadlines July 15 for winter, January 15 for summer).

Full English requirement detail (verified): IELTS Academic: overall score of at least 6.5, with no section below 5.5. This is the general English requirement in KIT's central admission regulations for English-taught master's programs; individual programs may set different requirements, so check the program statute.

PROGRAMS & STUDY AREAS

KIT offers about 100 bachelor's and master's degree programs across engineering, computer science, natural sciences, economics and the humanities.

Bachelor's programs

Bachelor's programs are taught in German. At application you should show German at B1 level; for enrollment you need DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4, Goethe C2, DSD II or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule. A preparatory German course at the Studienkolleg is available if you have not yet met the requirement.

Master's programs

Master's programs are offered in German and in English. For English-taught master's programs, KIT's central admission regulations set general English requirements (TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no section below 5.5, Cambridge CAE/CPE or UNIcert II), but individual programs may set different requirements, so always check the statute of your chosen program. Some master's programs additionally require GRE, GATE or GMAT scores. Admission depends on a general eligibility check by the International Students Office and a program-specific academic assessment by the department's selection committee.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FUNDING

KIT offers the Deutschlandstipendium: €300 per month for one year, open to enrolled KIT students and incoming first-year students of all nationalities with outstanding academic achievements, social commitment or special personal circumstances. Around 300 scholarships are typically awarded each year (345 in winter semester 2024/25). Applications open every April (the next application period is April 14 to 29, 2027) and are submitted online via the KIT Career Service. Students of the HECTOR School, the Carl Benz School of Engineering and the Studienkolleg are not eligible.

For external funding, KIT's International Students Office points students to the DAAD scholarship database. As always, check current deadlines and conditions on the official pages before applying.
