UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW

Heidelberg University — officially Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, or Ruperto Carola — is the oldest university in Germany, founded in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I of the Palatinate and reshaped in 1803 by Karl Friedrich of Baden, to whom it owes the second part of its name. The university's own publications describe it as one of Europe's most research-intensive institutions, successful in all funding rounds of Germany's Excellence Competitions, educating more than 30,000 students, among them more than 5,000 international students.

Heidelberg is a comprehensive university: its faculties span the humanities and theology, law, economics and social sciences, mathematics and the natural sciences, life sciences and medicine. It does not run classical engineering departments, but it is exceptionally strong in medicine, biosciences, physics, chemistry and the humanities. Research strength also comes from close cooperation with the many non-university research institutions based in Heidelberg.

The city of Heidelberg, in the south-western state of Baden-Württemberg, is a compact, historic university town on the Neckar river, famous for its old town and castle. For South Asian students it offers a classic German university experience, a large international student community, and good rail connections to Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich. Budget carefully: the university puts minimum living costs at €992 per month, and non-EU students pay a state tuition fee on top of the semester fee.

The university's own history is woven into the city: in the 17th century it lost its famous Bibliotheca Palatina manuscript collection to war, and its modern rise dates from the 1803 reorganisation that turned it into a state-financed research university. Today its teaching is explicitly research-based, with an emphasis on individual and interdisciplinary study paths.

International students from non-EU/EEA countries with a foreign university entrance qualification pay tuition of €1,500 per semester for Bachelor's and consecutive Master's degree programmes, under Baden-Württemberg state law. All students also pay the semester fee, currently €189.80 per semester. Heidelberg University puts minimum living costs at €992 per month. Waivers of the international tuition fee are possible in defined hardship cases.

ADMISSIONS & REQUIREMENTS

International applicants apply online through Heidelberg's campus portal heiCO. The International Relations Office assesses foreign school and university certificates for admission; applicants from India, China and Vietnam also need an APS certificate. Most programmes admit for the winter semester, some also for the summer semester, and deadlines are set per programme — incomplete applications cannot be topped up after the deadline, so prepare certified copies and translations early.

Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require proof such as DSH-2 or TestDaF. English-taught master's programmes set their English proof in their admission regulations; Heidelberg's graduate schools and faculties commonly publish IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 as the minimum, with Cambridge CAE also accepted. School-leavers whose certificate is not equivalent to the German Abitur may first have to complete the Studienkolleg preparatory course and its assessment test, which is also applied for through heiCO.

PROGRAMS & STUDY AREAS

Heidelberg offers bachelor's, master's and state examination programmes across four broad areas: humanities and theology; law, economics and social sciences; mathematics, engineering and natural sciences; and medicine. There are no programmes in agriculture, and classical engineering is not offered.

English-taught master's programmes are concentrated in the natural and life sciences, mathematics and computer science, and economics, including research-oriented programmes attached to its graduate schools, such as the biosciences, and interdisciplinary degrees like Molecular Systems Science and Engineering. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and law are taught as state examination programmes, mainly in German. Doctoral training is a particular strength, with structured graduate schools in several fields.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FUNDING

Heidelberg is frank that scholarships in Germany are relatively few and must usually be applied for very early — often from your home country, before you apply for a study place. Its scholarship pages list schemes including the Deutschlandstipendium (€300 per month for talented students of all nationalities), Hans-Peter Wild Talent Scholarships for new students in STEM subjects, and the Amirana Scholarship for medicine and dentistry students from non-EU developing countries.

Other routes include the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM, DAAD-funded STIBET completion grants for international students finishing their degrees, and hardship waivers of the international tuition fee in defined cases. The DAAD database and German missions abroad are the main external sources.
