All students pay a social fee, currently about €300 per semester, in return for a semester ticket entitling them to use public transport (excluding high-speed trains) free of charge throughout Germany. Remaining costs including accommodation, personal expenses and health insurance, which is mandatory for all temporary and permanent residents in Germany, are usually about €900-€1,000 per month. Non-EU citizens need to provide evidence of at least €11,904 per year for the period of their stay to obtain a visa for study purposes from the German Embassy in their country.

ADMISSIONS & REQUIREMENTS

International applicants with a foreign study qualification first apply to uni-assist for a preliminary examination documentation (VPD). The VPD application should be submitted at least eight weeks before the end of the desired programme's application period (the general window cited on the application page is 1 June to 15 July), and the VPD cannot be submitted late — a uni-assist application alone is not an application for a study place.

After receiving the VPD, applicants apply online via the Bielefeld application portal within the programme's deadline, uploading the VPD with all other documents. Documents include the higher education entrance qualification, any previous study records, proof of language proficiency, and — where schooling was completed in India, Vietnam or China — an APS certificate. The application via uni-assist is subject to a fee, but the amount is not stated on the Bielefeld application page read.

Most programmes are admission-restricted (numerus clausus) with limited capacity, and selection is generally by grade; for applicants of other nationalities a separate procedure applies with 7% of available places. For the English-taught MA World Studies, the application period for international applicants is 1 June to 15 July and the programme starts only in winter.

PROGRAMS & STUDY AREAS

The university offers a large programme range across the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and technology. Verified English-taught options documented on official programme pages include the MA World Studies (two academic years, four semesters, winter start only, taught by specialists in global structures and interactions, preparing students for academia and national or international organisations) and, as listed in programme catalogues, the MSc Data Science.

Most bachelor's programmes are German-taught. Because English requirements are set per programme, applicants must check the admission rules of their specific programme; no university-wide English-taught programme list with test scores was verified on the official Bielefeld pages read.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FUNDING

Bielefeld University does not provide any scholarships for international students for the whole study period, according to its official programme FAQ and costs pages. It sometimes announces partial scholarships for restricted periods, usually one semester; details are published on the International Office website.

The International Office also provides information on various other sources of financial support available to international students in Germany. Students should therefore plan to self-fund, with the visa proof of €11,904 per year in mind, rather than relying on a full-period university scholarship.
